First Aid:
All students are encouraged to bring any splinting materials with them that they can think of. We like to see how creative the scouts get with splinting. Examples of splinting materials include cardboard boxes, magazines, wood boards, etc. All other materials will be provided.
Homework will be to make a first aid kit and bring it for the firefighters to look at. This can be done prior to the class, or after the class is taught. www.meritbadge.com has a list of supplies. We will also have a list for them at the class. If you decide to make your kit before class, bring it with you and show it to the firefighters.
Fire Safety:
The homework assignment will be to write a report about a career in the fire service. This can be done prior to the class, but will be easier to write after they meet the firefighters.
Draw a floor plan of house and map escape routes. They can do this before the class if they would like to, but they’ll be given time during class. They can get a grid to draw their house at www.sparky.org
Emergency Preparedness:
To receive this badge, the scout must complete the First Aid Merit Badge. It doesn’t matter what order they do the classes, but First Aid is a requirement. If they want to do First Aid at a later date, they can.
Homework will be to build a family emergency kit. Supply lists can be found online. We will provide them with a list at the class also. Visit www.meritbadge.com for more info.
Every requirement for the badge will be covered during the class except for the homework assignments which can be completed prior to the class, or after the class. If the homework is done after the class, we ask that the scout bring it to the station at a later date to get it signed off.
Please wear sturdy shoes and clothing that can get dirty to all classes.
