The Hazardous Materials
Team provides the citizens
of the greater Salt Lake area
with efficient, effective, and
professional Hazardous Material
Mitigation response. This is
accomplished by utilizing a
ten member Hazmat response
team. This team operates from
Stations 107 (5-members) and
109 (5-members). The Hazmat
response team functions as a
resource under the direction
and supervision of the on
scene Incident Commander.
The Hazmat response team
provides support in the following
areas:
- Responds to hazardous
material releases/spills or
potential release/spills for
the purpose of stopping the
release/spill using established
emergency protocols.
- Selects and uses proper
specialized chemical personal
protective equipment which is
provided by the department, at
all incidents (depending on the
incident).
- Classifies, identifies,
and verifies known and
unknown materials using
advanced survey instruments
and equipment, and applying
knowledge of chemical and
toxicological terminology
and the behaviors of various
chemicals.
- Assesses hazards
and risks, applying learned
techniques.
- Performs control,
containment, and or
confinement operations at the
scene, within the capabilities of
the resources and the personal
protective equipment available
and with the responding
unit, following established
emergency procedure.
- Plugs, patches or
otherwise stops the release
of the hazardous substance,
using established emergency
procedure.
- Implements
decontamination procedures,
following established
emergency procedure.
The Hazardous Materials Team
supports the following State and
Federal response programs:
- Regional/Statewide
hazardous materials support via
our State Mobile Lab Response
Unit.
