Part-time Employment in Support Positions

Unified Fire Authority occasionally hires part-time support employees.  These individuals are generally hired for office support positions that involve entering, retrieving and manipulating data using Excel spreadsheets or other software programs, filling a variety of documents, and completing order forms or other types of paperwork.  Other part-time positions involve making deliveries, unpacking shipments and performing general warehouse duties.

We accept applications for these positions continuously although we typically have less than five vacancies each year.  To be considered for a part-time position, please submit an employment application and write PART-TIME SUPPORT POSITIONS on  the “title of the position applied for” line.   Applications may be returned  by email to ufajobs@gmail.com, by fax at (801) 743-2711, by mail to Unified Fire Authority Personnel Division, 3380 So. 900 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84119, or in person to the receptionist at our administrative office (3380 So. 900 W.).  As vacancies occur, the hiring manager will screen through the active applications and select individuals to be interviewed and subsequently hired.  Individuals will typically be contacted by phone or email. Please keep your contact information updated in order to remain active.

Part-time employees are paid on an hourly basis and the typical pay rate is between $8.00 and $12.00 dollars per hour based on duties performed, experience and qualifications.

Part –time employees are not considered merit employees and are not entitled to general UFA employment benefits (insurance, retirement contributions, tuition assistance and paid leave).  Part-time employees without benefits are eligible for a few specific benefits however, including workers compensation, training, and incentive awards.
Part-time employees are considered “at will” employees who may be terminated at any time, for any reason, and without notice, explanation or pre-termination hearing.

FIREFIGHTER AND PARAMEDIC RECRUITMENT

Thank you for your interest in employment as a firefighter or firefighter/paramedic with Unified Fire Authority. We do not anticipate another recruitment for Firefighter until the winter of 2010, or another recruitment for Paramedic until the summer of 2009 . If you are interested in receiving additional information regarding either recruitment process, please fill out the attached interest form
As soon as we have a specific testing date and specific recruitment dates, we will notify everyone on the interest list and update this website as well.  When you return this form to us, your name will be placed on an Interest List. Completing this form does not register you to take the examination, nor is it considered an application. It just allows us to mail/email you information about the application and testing process once the recruitment and examination dates have been established. We will not be accepting official applications or test registrations until the recruitment period begins. If your contact information changes, please submit a new interest form.

Individuals are required to be certified as EMT-basic in the state of Utah prior to being hired as a firefighter although they may participate in the testing process without this certification.   Paramedics are required to be certified as a Paramedic in the State of Utah in order to begin working, and in order to participate in the testing process, they must be either certified in the state of Utah, or another state, or be nationally registered.  Information regarding EMT or Paramedic certification may be obtained from the Utah State Bureau of Emergency Medical Services at (801) 273-6666.

For those individuals who are hired as Paramedics, the UFA recognizes time employed (as a full-time Firefighter or Paramedic) for a fire-based, paramedic-providing agency. Credit for time is awarded on a year-for-year basis and the maximum amount that is recognized is five years. Credit for time is for pay purposes only and is not recognized for any purpose associated with the employee’s seniority date. Specific information on how this credited time affects pay will be provided in the recruitment materials available when the recruitment begins.

Paramedics may also apply for employment through our firefighter testing process, but if selected will be hired (and paid) as firefighters.  In addition, for individuals hired as firefighters, UFA does not recognize time employed as a firefighter or paramedic for other fire-based, paramedic-providing agencies. After completing a nine-month probation period, firefighters are eligible to compete for promotion to existing Firefighter Specialist (including Paramedic) vacancies.
