Fire School 101
On an annual basis UFA and Salt Lake County Firefighters Local 1696, partner to host Fire School 101. A one-day event, where invited students- who mainly come from elected or appointed municipal offices- literally step into firefighters “boots” for a day. The purpose of the experience is two-fold; 1) to help students become personally familiar with the Unified Fire Authority as an organization as their personal provider of emergency services, and 2) to expose community leaders to the challenges which firefighters encounter in “doing the job” on a daily basis.
Fire School 101 students participate in presentations where firefighters demonstrate and describe the various capabilities that the fire department provides including; emergency medical services, fire fighting- in structures and wildfires, hazardous materials response, as well as heavy and water rescues.
The capstone of the day occurs as students get to put on firefighting turnout gear and participate in several hands -on exercises. Including fighting an actual fire and using the Jaws of Life.
The students come away as better informed community leaders from this unique experience.
